The increases were announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana when he delivered his National Budget at the Cape Town City Hall on Wednesday, 23 February 2023.
SOCIAL GRANTS SET TO INCREASE
In 2022, the Department of Social Development was allocated the biggest piece of the pie in order to provide social relief to millions of South Africans from poor households who were battered by the Covid-19 pandemic. This year, the department will be allocated R66 billion over the medium term with R36 billion to fund the extension of the Covid-19 SRD grant until 1 March 2024.

This is how much social grant beneficiaries will now get monthly:
- Child Support Grant increases from R480 to R510 on 1 October 2023.
- Foster Child Grant increases from R1070 to R1130
- Older Person’s Grant increases by R90 on 1 April and R10 in October 2023. In total, the grant will now be R2090
- Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant – R350
