Apply for a post in the local media before being registered at an academy. Below is information in this regard.

According to the traffic training policy, one has to first apply for a post in the local media before being registered at an academy. Below is information in this regard.

To enrol for Traffic Officer training, interested candidates must be employed by either a local authority (municipality) or provincial administration as a Traffic Trainee.

This means that you would need to apply for a post when it is advertised, though you would not be required to hold a Traffic Officer qualification to apply for such a post.

Vacancies are advertised in the open media, so you could find available posts in your local and national newspapers. You may also contact any local or provincial authority directly to enquire whether vacancies exist and when posts will be advertised.

What interested candidates cannot do, however, is an attempt to apply through traffic colleges and academies, as they do not distribute application forms nor handle any applications.

To become a Traffic Officer, there are a set of requirements to be met, which include the following:

  • Must have a grade 12 certificate or equivalent NQF level 4.
  • Must have permanent employment at a provincial/local authority as a traffic officer.
  • Must have no criminal record.
  • Must be medically, physically and mentally fit as well as competent to perform the applicable tasks and duties.
  • Must hold a code B driving licence (manual transmission). Learner’s licences will not be accepted.
  • Applicants must not be older than 35 years.

Those candidates who have managed to be successfully employed as a Traffic Officer / Traffic Trainee are then sent to one of the 14 Traffic Colleges approved by the Minister of Transport to begin their one-year training.

Those who wish to become Metro Police will have to endure a similar process, as Metro Police Officers are trained as Traffic Officers, but with the addition of being trained around certain functions of Police Officers.

Before you can become a Metro Police Officer you must be trained and registered as a Traffic Officer.

In addition to all their duties as Traffic Officers; Metro Police Officers also focus on crime prevention and the enforcement of Municipal by-laws.
